Fiji’s located in the South Pacific Ocean northeast of New Zealand and a place we’d always wanted to visit.
During the Australian winter we decided was the best time so we booked a week holiday and took advantage of an offer through groupon. We spent two nights on Denarau Island which is close to the Nadi airport and then 5 nights on Nukubati Island.
Denarau Island is like an expat vacation, we were there during school holidays so it was busier than normal. Lots of families and kids around but no locals really as they only come into the area to work. We’d booked two nights at the Hilton hotel on Denarau and it was nice, we spent the days by the pool relaxing. No one really swims in the ocean, just the resort pools. We had dinner at the marina one night which was really good, an Indian restaurant but I can’t remember the name. I would not recommend anyone go here for a vacation, just a stop-over to somewhere else would do. **Note, the resorts on Denarau are very pricey, a beer at the Hilton was $10.50 compared to a 6 pack from the local bottle store for only $20 (Fijian)** Overall the hotel was nice and we just kicked back and relaxed, service was a little slow at times.
Nukubati was amazing, we spent 5 nights here and would definitely recommend it for a relaxing do nothing type of holiday. It’s an adult only type resort, no kids, no TV’s and all inclusive. We booked a deal through groupon which was pretty good, see the link below. You arrive by boat and have a personalized arrival, they know your name and won’t forget until you leave. There’s 7 huts and a max of 14 people can stay on the island so it’s not crowded.
Activities: We went out fishing one day and caught giant trevally, coral trout and snapper which was an experience. I’d also recommend the snorkeling around the reef. You have different activities to choose from, such as stand up paddle boarding, walking tour around the island/ medicine walk, snorkeling etc.
The island has lots of staff from the 3 local villages that work here, approx 40 staff on the island. The stay was inclusive and included all meals which were 3 course and a choice of alcohol (Beer, Wine and Cocktails). The cocktails were good and the culture at night was something to remember with local Fijian dances and kava drinking. The Sand bar breakfast is also recommended.
"Getting to Nukubati Island" From Labasa it was approx 1 hours drive down local dirt roads and a short 10min boat ride, transfers were included in the deal through groupon.

We booked the whole holiday independently, the flights were booked through Qantas and Fiji Airways (Sydney to Nadi to Labasa to Nadi to Sydney) and the hotel on Denarau Island was booked directly though the following website http://www.fijibeachresortbyhilton.com/. The stay on Nukubati was booked through groupon.
Points to highlight:
Fiji is a good place to escape the winter months, during our visit in June the weather was 28-29 degrees every day. Nukubati Island is marked on the map below
