Date of stay: New Years 2006/2007
Where you stayed: B&B hotel (Tour accommodation)
Tour or pre planned: Hogmanay Tour with Euro Encounters
Hogmanay takes place in Edinburgh, Scotland and celebrates the New Year. The Hogmanay festival is one of the largest in the world and, in my opinion, Europe’s best. Each year thousands of people head to Edinburgh to celebrate.
Hogmanay came about from the suppression of the usual Christmas festivities by the Presbyterian Church in Scotland. So the normal Winter Festival celebrations turned into one huge New Year’s Eve party now known as Hogmanay.
Hogmanay festivities run over a number of days from December 30 to January 2nd, the New Year’s Eve party kicks of on Princes Street and thousands of people party the night away. You will need a ticket to access the street party. If you are travelling with a tour group check the fine print to make sure the ticket is included. The lively entertainment scene on the grass area below the Castle is bound to keep you entertained, carnival rides, floats and an amazing firework displays throughout the event.
We attended the 2006 & 2007 Hogmanay celebrations; unfortunately 2007 was cancelled due to weather conditions and a number of other Hogmanays have been cancelled. The wind around this time of year can be extraordinary. The year we attended, at times, walking was difficult due to the gale force winds. If the event is cancelled you’ll still be guaranteed to a great party and pubs will pack out.
Hogmanay tours vary and most tour companies either offer accommodation only packages, fast train or coach options from London. Personally we thought the train option was the best choice. Just make sure that your tour company or if you book yourself, you have an allocated seat. The train is extremely popular at this time of the year and the train companies do over book so if you don’t have an allocated seat you could fine that you are standing for 5 hours. We booked through Euro Encounters and would recommend their tours. Click on the following link to see the Hogmanay tours on offer through Euro Encounters. Edinburgh has so much more to offer during your stay, check out the Edinburgh Blog for more information.
Points to highlight: Hogmanay is one of the largest New Years party’s in the world if not the biggest, as such things can get out of control due to the thousands of people attending, police will arrest those who appear to drunk or acting up. Weather conditions have caused past Hogmanay celebrations to be cancelled so bear this in mind (2003/04 & 2006/07 we’re cancelled). All in all Edinburgh is an amazing city and highly recommended.
