Being apart of the largest tomato fight in the world was always up there with things to do in Europe. The festival takes place on the last Wednesday in August and everybody descends on a small town called Bunyol, not far from Valencia. The fight lasts a little over 1hour and thousands of people from all over the world come to take part. You basically follow the crowds to the main street; locals are very friendly and offer you Sangria and food. During our visit the locals started to pack up tables and close doors/windows and cover them in plastic around 11ish and then begin spraying the crowds with water. It was quite a sight.
A large ham leg is hung from a GREASY FLAG POLE. People are pretty much climbing on top of each other to get to the top and claim the ham. When the ham is knocked off the fight begins. There’s a loud horn that signals the start and the trucks start driving up the cobblestone streets, the street is already packed wall to wall with people and now imagine 10+ trucks rolling through the middle filled with tones of tomatoes. It gets pretty crazy and you’ll be pushed and squashed while having tomato’s hurled at you. After the fight ends, the locals will hose you down and you make your way back to your tour bus to change and relax (large bins are supplied and end up over flowing with Tomato covered clothes). The festival is an experience you’ll never forget and enjoy picking Tomato seeds out of your ears weeks later!
Points to highlight: Be sure to wear clothes that you’re happy to throw away (they will get totaled) and have a clean pair to change into after the fight. We’d also recommend an under water camera or waterproofed housing for photo’s and have your swimming goggles packed.
**NOTE** You now need a ticket to any the festival, previously you could turn up on the day to join in. One of our team members did the 2014 tour and that review can be read via the following link - Tomato Festival 2014
